Jetty Modifications & Dredging Project.

Aden lies at the west end of the Gulf of Aden, on the direct shipping route between Europe and Arabian Gulf. The Aden Refinery Company oil harbour is at the Little Aden penninsula which is on the west side of Tawahi Bay.

Basically, Aden Refinery company oil harbour consists of four tankers
berths, two being single T-headed jetties, and the remaining two being sited on either
side of a finger jetty. Tanker berths 1 & 2 each consist of a jetty head with combined road and pipeway approach. Nine isolated mooring dolphins for these two berths are provided
to take the ships ropes. Tanker berths 3 & 4 consist of a jetty head with berthing faces on
each side and a combined road and pipeway approach. Four mooring dolphins are provided, two inshore of the jetty head in the approach and two offshore of the jetty head
and connected to it by a light footway. The oil harbour was constructed during the period
of 1952 to 1954.

Aden Refinery Company essentially operates for various oil companies who bring their own crude and collect the equivalent petroleum products on payment of a processing fee. Due to the low availability of tankers of size below 55,000 SDWT in market, the various oil companies have expressed difficulties in chartering these sizes of tankers and have been requesting ARC for facilities to receive bigger tankers. In view of this, ARC have decided to develop a deep water oil terminal for receiving bigger tankers
up to 110,000 SDWT.

1)SCOPE OF THE PROJECT WORKS.

The project works include the following principal elements to be carried out at the oil harbour .

a) The rehabilitation of existing oil berths No.1, 2, 3 and upgrading berth No.4; which includes:-

1) Demolishing the existing concrete jetty head decks.

2) Repairing the conrete on the approach roads, walkways, and mooring dolphins.

3) Repairing the steelwork on the jetty heads and approach arms.

4) Reconstructing the concrete jetty heads including new jetty buildings.

5) Constructing new independent central fenders at Berth 1 & 2.

b) The construction of new berthing dolphins at Berth 4.

c) Dredging of the harbour area.

d) Dredging the existing approah channel deeper and wider and extending
this beyond the present Fairway buoy to the -15m. contour.

e) Building new Navigational approah channel beacons, re-establishing
existing and installing new channel markers.

f) Mechanical And Electrical.

The existing loading facilities which were installed in 1954, consist of
flow jib cranes mounted on an elevated structure on each of four jetties.
Each crane is capable of handling a single flexible 8" dia. hose between the jetty manifold and the tanker manifold.
At present Jetties Nos.1 & 2 have 23 jetty manifold connections whilst jetties Nos. 3 & 4 have 28 connections.
The existing loading facilities were replaced with new all metal loading arms which are manifolded together, for compatible products, thus reducing the number
of loading arms required per jetty.
Other equipment which are replaced includes the jetty manifolds and valves, slops pumps, motors, floodlighting, switchgear. cabling and instrumentation in order to accommodate crude carriers of up to 110,000 SDWT Berth No.4. was upgraded. Fire fighting facilities at the jetty areas were also upgraded.
